Most people worry about getting around Hong Kong, but you shouldn’t. It is extremely easy and quick to do so using the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system. It covers almost all of the places you could possibly want to go, including a stop at the boundary with Mainland China.
Transport in Hong Kong:
The MTR has eleven rail lines: Island, South Island, Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Tsung Kwan O, Tung Chung, West Rail, East Rail, Ma On Shan, Disneyland Resort and the Airport Express. There is also a light rail system that you can take between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun in the New Territories.
The best way to get around is to purchase an adult tourist day pass ($65) for yourself and a child tourist day pass ($30) for your kids aged 3 to 11. Anyone younger can go with you and anyone older will need an adult pass. You can go wherever you want on any one day for this price. It is valid for one month after you purchase it, but it only works for one day. Your pass will not work on the Airport Express, the MTR bus, East Rail Line First Class, Lo Wu Station and Lok Ma Chau Station.
You can get a taxi throughout Hong Kong, and it will likely be a good bet for some of your trips. All of the taxis are relatively cheap, clean, and have air conditioning, a must for the summer days.
You can hail a taxi along the street, but they do have to drop you off in certain places. The easiest place to hail a cab is a hotel or taxi stand.
There are three different types of taxis that you can take:
Instead of using a taxi, you might want to consider downloading the Uber app. This will allow you to pick the safest drivers to get you where you want to go and you don’t have to worry about hailing the cab. It will also make the exchange of money non-existent because you pay right through the app.
Red: Operates throughout most of Hong Kong except for Tung Chung Road and the south side of Lantau Island.
Green: Only serve the New Territories.
Blue: Only operate on Lantau Island.
If you need an accessible taxi, you can call two different organizations that will carry a wheelchair: SynCab and Diamond Cab.
